I couldn't wait. I caught Hostel yesterday with the Artist Formerly Known as General Logan. Let me allow that I had a fun time with Eli Roth's first flick, Cabin Fever. It wasn't the second coming of Sam Raimi but it had some honest atmosphere and a solid appreciation of the genre(s).

Hostel blows it away. It's a proper film. By that I mean it's a well-thoughtout, layered and coiled work. Not just a sound design scare film. The marketing is way off. IT ISN'T A TORTURE/GORE PORN MOVIE. Roth (and his editor the esteemed George Folsey) amazingly cut around the grue in such a way that it's more emotionally intense than just a rehash of The Best of Faces Of Death. But it's still a pretty damn bloody night at the movies. The artistry of maestro Greg Nicotero does not unnoticed.

Between Hostel and Devils Rejects, I feel we're at the threshhold of a new horror renaissance. Much like Vietnam and domestic strife of the 70's influenced Tobe Hooper I think we're seeing the artistic effect of modern atrocities like Abu Ghraib, Iraq, and Guantanamo that are wafting over the airwaves 24/7.

Seeing it again tonight with my wife. I'll give 2nd sceening thoughts later.

Also: Match Point. Very excited for that too.

It's that good, eh?

I'm not one to catch horror films in the theater. Part of that's my not having folk to take with me (my friends are sissies). Part of that's because I prefer to watch them on my couch (I am a sissy).

All this good press is making me want to plunk my money down, though. I'd be interested to hear what the lady has to say.

I love horror and make a concerted effort to catch them theatrically. That group vibe, a couple hundred strangers tense in the dark, cannot be replicated at home. BUT...Hostel made me so nervous that I kept making sure no one was sitting behind me...ahem.

She dug it. Her exact words were "For a movie about torture chambers...that was a lot of fun."
